Pathways to Active Living (PALs) is Beacon’s therapeutic activity experience for residents that reside in our facilities. We believe that every person has the right to enjoy and participate in life to his/her fullest potential, as independently as possible, optimizing the capabilities and skills he/she possesses.
The PALs program was created with the belief that each resident is composed of physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual components. Recreation, leisure and interests are inherent to human nature and appropriately designed therapeutic recreation will facilitate a balanced life and general health and wellness for each individual, no matter one’s age or abilities.

Mr. B was a 70 year old participant of our Physical and Occupational Therapy program for an intense 20 day program. Prior to Mr. B’s accident he worked on a blue berry farm. He drove tractors and ATV’s around the farm to help with the daily up keep of the farm. In April of 2018, Mr. B was involved in an ATV accident sustaining L1-L2 fractures. At the time of his admission he was unsure that he would be able to go back to his everyday life of doing what he loved. While at River Brook Healthcare Mr. B was in Physical Therapy where they worked to increase endurance, balance, and lower body strength. Also, he participated in Occupational Therapy where they worked with him to safely put on and take off his back brace, perform personal hygiene, and bilateral upper extremity, and regain strength to complete activities of daily living and to return home independently. Mr. B made sufficient progress with therapy and was able to return home. Shortly after Mr. B was discharged he was able to get back to his daily routine of helping around the farm and climbing back up on his tractor and ATV. He stated, “I am so thankful for your facility and staff for helping me to be able to return back to what I love! I just have to be extra careful with my steps and hang on a little tighter while riding my ATV!” Mr. B was kind enough to allow for staff to come out to his farm and witness his great accomplishments and watch him doing everything he loves to do!
